Troxerutin

Troxerutin is available in several pharmaceutical forms, depending on the therapeutic indication and clinical preferences. The most common presentations are:

• Gels for topical use, such as Troxerutin Chirmis 20 mg/g from Tis Farmaceutic, which allow direct application to the affected area, ensuring rapid absorption and localised action;
• Oral capsules, which help eliminate the symptoms of venous and lymphatic circulation disorders.

The topical form is, however, preferred in the symptomatic treatment of superficial venous disorders due to its ease of administration, increased tolerability and reduced risk of systemic effects.

Troxerutin is recommended as an adjunctive treatment in:

• Chronic venous disease (including varicose veins);
• Superficial thrombophlebitis and post-thrombophlebitic syndrome;
• Internal and external haemorrhoids, in the early and intermediate stages;
• Microcirculatory disorders, characterised by capillary fragility or post-traumatic oedema;
• Post-phlebosclerosis pain and inflammation;
• In the prophylaxis and treatment of varicose veins in people at high risk, such as pregnant women or sedentary people.

Troxerutin gel is applied externally, twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, in a thin layer on the affected area, either on the lower limbs (in the case of varicose veins) or in the perianal area (in the case of haemorrhoids).

It is recommended to massage the product gently until it is completely absorbed into the skin, unless severe local pain prevents this – in which case an occlusive dressing may be used.

Troxerutin is contraindicated in patients with:

• Known hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients
• Open, infected or compromised skin lesions in the application area

Treatment of haemorrhoids with Troxerutin does not replace specific therapy in the case of a severe haemorrhoidal crisis and is only indicated as a short-term adjuvant therapy.

When used for haemorrhoids, a prior proctological diagnosis is required to rule out rectal pathologies requiring specific surgical or pharmacological treatment.

According to available data, Troxerutin is well tolerated and the incidence of adverse effects is very low. However, in rare cases the following may occur:

• Local irritation, itching, burning sensation;
• Dermatological allergic reactions, especially in patients sensitive to excipients

No significant systemic effects have been reported, given the low absorption through the skin.

No significant interactions between Troxerutin and other medicines or food have been identified. Due to its topical use, the risk of systemic interactions is minimal.

However, it is recommended to avoid concomitant use with other irritating dermatological products or local anti-inflammatory treatments without medical advice.

To date, no cases of overdose with topical Troxerutin have been reported. In the event of excessive application, it is recommended to wash the area with soap and water.

However, follow the instructions for use to avoid any unpleasant side effects.

The product should be stored at temperatures below 25°C in its original packaging to protect it from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children. Use before the expiry date stated on the packaging.
