Description Solmucol
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.nl team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Solmucol is an effective medicine used for the treatment of various respiratory conditions involving increased production of thick, viscous mucus that is not adequately cleared by coughing. Thanks to the active substance N-acetylcysteine, Solmucol helps to dissolve mucus in the airways, thus facilitating expectoration.
Forms of release
Solmucol is available in several pharmaceutical forms to meet the different needs of patients:
- Granules (with a pleasant orange flavor), which dissolve in water;
- Orange-flavored suckinglozenges, ideal for quick administration;
- Syrup (available in two flavors, raspberry-raspberry and plum-tropical), easy to give to children, with a handy dispensing cap.
These forms allow the treatment to be personalized according to patient preference and age.
Indications for use
Solmucol mucolytic is used for the treatment of respiratory conditions characterized by increased production of viscous mucus, which cannot be eliminated properly. These conditions include:
- Acute and chronic bronchitis, characterized by inflammation of the bronchi and accumulation of mucus in the airways;
- Bronchial asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways, leading to shortness of breath and coughing with expectoration;
- Sinusitis, inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, which can cause increased mucus production;
- Laryngitis and tracheitis, inflammations of the larynx and trachea, causing coughing and shortness of breath;
- Flu and other respiratory viral infections, which lead to a wet cough with increased mucus production;
- Cystic fibrosis, a rare genetic condition that causes thick mucus to build up in the lungs and other parts of the body.
Dosing regimen
The dose of the mucolytic Solmucol depends on the patient's age, the type of condition being treated and the form of release. For Solmucol granules, the dosing regimen is as follows:
- Children from 1 to 2 years of age: 50 mg N-acetylcysteine 50 mg 3 times daily (equivalent to ½ bag of granules 100 mg 3 times daily).
- Children 2 to 12 years: 100 mg of N-acetylcysteine 3 times a day (equivalent to 1 bag of 100 mg granules 3 times a day).
- Adults and children over the age of 12 years: 600 mg of N-acetylcysteine per day, administered either in 3 equal doses or in a single dose of 600 mg (one bag of 600 mg granules per day).
Contraindications
Solmucol should not be administered to persons with hypersensitivity to N-acetylcysteine or to any of the excipients.
Do not take Solmucol if you are breast-feeding, as there are insufficient data to confirm the safety of N-acetylcysteine during this period.
Particulars of use
To maximize the effectiveness of the drug, an increased fluid intake is recommended during treatment with Solmucol, thereby supporting the mucolytic effect of N-acetylcysteine.
Caution is advised in taking the drug in patients with bronchial asthma because of the risk of bronchospasm.
Side-effects
Solmucol is generally well tolerated by most patients. However, side effects may occur, such as:
- Gastrointestinal upset, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain;
- Allergic reactions, including rash or itching;
- Bronchospasm, especially in patients with bronchial asthma.
If severe side effects occur, the patient should discontinue treatment and contact the doctor.
Interactions with other medicines and food
N-acetylcysteine may interact with:
- Nitroglycerin
- Antihypertensive drugs
- Anticoagulant drugs
- Chloroquine for the treatment of malaria
It is recommended that patients undergoing treatment for chronic diseases inform their doctor before taking Solmucol to prevent possible interference.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain may occur. If an overdose is suspected, urgent medical advice should be sought.
Storage conditions
Solmucol should be stored at temperatures below 25°C, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. The product should be kept in the original, tightly closed packaging to prevent contamination.
