Description Maltan
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.nl team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Maltan is a dermatological ointment specially formulated for nipple care during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This stage in a woman's life is characterized by complex physiological changes that can cause local discomfort, irritation, cracks, or inflammation of the breasts and especially the nipples.
Maltan offers a non-invasive topical solution with protective, moisturizing, and repairing properties, being indicated for both prophylactic and curative purposes. With a hypoallergenic composition, free of fragrances or preservatives, the product is particularly suitable for pregnant women and nursing mothers, minimizing the risks of skin irritation or allergic sensitization.
Forms of release
Maltan is available as an ointment packaged in 10 g and 40 g tubes for topical application. Its viscous formula allows for even distribution on the nipple area, ensuring effective coverage and gradual absorption into the superficial skin tissues. The tube packaging is hygienic, practical, and reduces the risk of contamination of the contents.
Indications for use
Maltan is recommended in the following situations:
- For preventive care of the nipples during pregnancy, in preparation for breastfeeding;
- For the prevention and treatment of nipple irritation, cracks, and inflammation associated with breastfeeding;
- As an adjuvant in the prevention of mastitis by maintaining skin integrity;
For deep moisturizing of dry or cracked skin in the areolar area; - To support skin elasticity, facilitating the physiological process of suckling and reducing maternal discomfort.
Dosage
During pregnancy, it is recommended to apply the ointment twice a day, starting approximately 2 months before delivery. Apply a small amount to the nipple and massage gently until absorbed.
During breastfeeding, apply after each breastfeeding session, preferably in the form of a poultice with sterile gauze or using nipple shields. You can apply 2-3 cm of product to the gauze or shield, removing any excess gently if necessary.
The frequency of administration can be daily or several times a day, depending on the individual needs of the patient.
Contraindications
To date, no major contraindications have been identified for the use of Maltan ointment. However, as a precautionary measure:
- A skin test is recommended before use in women with a history of contact dermatitis or atopic reactions;
- Avoid application to open infected wounds or purulent lesions without medical advice.
If local hypersensitivity reactions (erythema, pruritus, stinging) occur, it is recommended to discontinue use and consult a doctor.
Special instructions for use
An important aspect of Maltan is its safety in direct contact with the infant's mouth. Its ingredients have no known adverse effects on the digestive tract or skin of the child.
The product is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, which promotes acceptance of the breast by the infant and does not interfere with sucking behavior.
Side effects
No frequent adverse reactions have been reported with topical administration of Maltan. In isolated cases, a local skin sensitivity reaction to one of the excipients may occur.
No adverse effects on the infant have been reported, either in terms of digestion or skin integrity.
Interactions with other drugs and food
Maltan is an exclusively topical product with no significant systemic absorption, therefore:
- It has no known drug interactions;
- It can be used in combination with other breast care products, provided that applications are alternated and overlapping of occlusive substances is avoided.
Overdose
Due to its safety profile and cutaneous use, overdose with Maltan is unlikely. However, it is recommended to follow the instructions and usual doses and avoid overuse without medical indication.
Storage
Maltan should be stored at room temperature (preferably below 25°C), away from direct light and heat sources. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. After opening, the tube should be tightly closed and used within the period indicated by the manufacturer. The packaging allows for hygienic use and protection from bacterial contamination.
