Ginger

Ginger is marketed in various pharmaceutical and food forms, suitable for both therapeutic and culinary use. Among the most common forms are: ginger capsules, ginger powder, ginger tea, tinctures, syrups or candied ginger.

There are also forms of ginger combined with other active substances on the market, such as turmeric with ginger, ginger with honey and turmeric, or a combination of turmeric, ginger and pepper.

The benefits of ginger are varied, and its therapeutic indications include:

• Reduction of nausea and vomiting: effective in motion sickness and nausea associated with pregnancy (use with caution);
• Relief of digestive discomfort: stimulates gastric and biliary secretions, combats bloating and indigestion;
• General and sexual tonic: supports vitality, reduces physical and mental asthenia;
• Immunostimulant and antioxidant: due to its high gingerol and antioxidant content;
• Natural anti-inflammatory: recommended for joint pain, chronic inflammation and rheumatic diseases; also, thanks to its anti-inflammatory effect, it can be taken as ginger tea for colds or flu.
• Male fertility: improves sperm quality and sperm motility.

For therapeutic effectiveness, the dosage should be adapted to the intended use and pharmaceutical form.

In general, capsules are taken 1-3 times a day or as needed, during meals, with a glass of water. In the case of ginger powder, 1 teaspoon per day is added to teas, smoothies, soups or other culinary preparations.

It is important to consult a doctor before use, especially in the case of chronic conditions, pregnancy or concomitant treatments.

Although considered safe in moderate doses, ginger is contraindicated in certain situations:

• Allergy to ginger or other plants in the Zingiberaceae family;
• Haemorrhagic disorders or anticoagulant treatments, as ginger has a mild anticoagulant effect;

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use ginger with caution and only on the advice of a doctor. Although it is effective against morning sickness, high doses may increase the risk of bleeding.

Elderly people or those with cardiovascular disease should consult their doctor before use, especially if they are taking anticoagulant or antihypertensive treatments.

Adverse effects associated with ginger consumption are rare but may include:

• Stomach discomfort (heartburn, stomach irritation);
• Mild diarrhoea
• Allergic reactions (itching, skin rash, hives)

The effects are usually temporary and occur mainly in cases of overdose or individual sensitivity.

Ginger may interact with:

• Anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents (e.g. warfarin, aspirin) – increases the risk of bleeding;
• Antihypertensive drugs – may enhance their effect;
• Antidiabetic drugs – may lower blood sugar and enhance the hypoglycaemic effect.

Overdose with ginger is rare, but in extreme cases severe gastrointestinal disorders may occur. In case of accidental overdose, it is recommended to discontinue use and seek medical advice immediately.

Ginger products, whether in capsule or powder form, should be stored in a dry, dark and cool place (below 25°C), away from direct light and moisture, in the original, tightly closed packaging. Keep out of the reach of children.
