What are D-Pearls?
D-Pearls are gelatin capsules with 20 µg of vitamin D3 in each capsule. Because they are small, they are easy to swallow. Vitamin D3 is fat soluble and is dissolved in cold pressed olive oil.
What is vitamin D?
Like other vitamins, vitamin D is essential for the body. There are several types of vitamin D, but the most important are D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D3 is synthesized in the skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol when we are sufficiently exposed to the sun or other similar types of UV radiation. The type of vitamin D synthesized in this way by the body is the most effective type of vitamin D, but its synthesis depends on the time of exposure to the sun and the intensity of the sun's rays. In a large part of Europe this only happens during the summer, and therefore the body produces vitamin D in sufficient quantities only at this time of the year.
Vitamin D2 is found only in food and is produced by fungi and plants when they are exposed to ultraviolet light. Both vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 are hydroxylated in the liver and kidneys and thus become biologically active. So far, science believes that both forms of vitamin D are equally effective in the body. But, depending on the measurement method used, vitamin D3 is 56-87% more effective than vitamin D2 at raising vitamin D levels in the blood. Moreover, Vitamin D3 is stored in adipose tissue three times more efficiently than Vitamin D2. *
* Heaney RP, et al. Vitamin D3 Is More Potent Than Vitamin D2 in Humans. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2010.
Children and institutionalized people need more vitamin D.
Vitamin D has a number of important functions in the body:
- participates in the process of cell division
- contributes to the maintenance of the health of the bone system and the maintenance of the health of the teeth
- contributes to the normal absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus
- contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and to the maintenance of the normal function of the muscular system
Sources of vitamin D
Vitamin D is found in several types of food, with the best sources being:
- eggs
- cod liver
- fatty fish
- oils
- butter
- avocados
Vitamin D supplements are generally recommended for:
- Children aged 0 to 2 years (vitamin D drops)
- Pregnant women
- Children and adults with dark skin
- Children and adults who cover their bodies completely during the summer
- People who don't stay outside during the day or generally avoid the sun
- Institutionalized persons
- Adults over 70 years of age
- Anyone, regardless of age, who is at risk of osteoporosis
Vegans and vegetarians are advised to follow official sun exposure advice and, as much as possible, supplement their vitamin D intake during the winter.
The level of vitamin D in the blood can be determined by a test that measures the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-(OH)D) and is expressed in nmol/l. The measured values of the vitamin can vary as follows:
12-25 nmol/l: Deficiency
25-50 nmol/l: Insufficient
>50 nmol/l: Sufficient
75-150 nmol/l: Optimal level for people with fragile bones and those with kidney problems
> approx. 200 nmol/l: Risk of overdose
> read: "greater than"
< read: "less than"
Equivalent units of measure
1 nmol/l = 0.4 ng/ml
Healthy people do not usually need to determine their vitamin D blood levels, but it is recommended to monitor their status if their lifestyle dictates it.
Insufficient exposure to the sun and an unbalanced diet, as well as certain medications, can affect the absorption of vitamin D in the body, thus increasing the need for supplementation with this nutrient.
