Using the breast pump:
When to express milk? If you are not having trouble breastfeeding, it is recommended (unless your doctor/lactation consultant advises you otherwise) that you wait until your milk production and breastfeeding schedule are established (usually at least 2 to 4 weeks postpartum ).
Exceptions:
- If you have trouble breastfeeding at first, pumping regularly can help improve and stabilize your milk supply
- If you express milk for your baby in hospital.
- If your breasts are engorged (painful or swollen): you can express a small amount of milk before feeding or between feedings to relieve pain and make it easier for the baby to latch on.
- If you have sore or cracked nipples, you can express milk until they heal.
- If you are separated from your baby and want to resume breastfeeding after you return, you need to express milk regularly to stimulate milk production. Find the best time to pump – for example, just before or after baby's first morning feed when breasts are full, or after nursing if baby hasn't fully pumped both breasts.
- If you return to work, you may need to express your milk during your break.
Using a breast pump takes practice and you may need several attempts to successfully express milk. However, the Philips AVENT electric breast pump is very easy to assemble, so you will quickly get used to pumping with it.
Tips:
- Familiarize yourself with the breast pump and how to use it before using it for the first time
- Find a time when you are not in a hurry and no one bothers you
- A photo of your baby can help with the trigger reflex
- Heat can also help: try pumping after a bath or shower, or place a warm towel or Philips AVENT thermos on your breast for a few minutes before pumping.
- You may find it easier to pump one breast while your baby is sucking on the other or right after nursing
- If pumping is painful, discontinue use of the pump and consult your nursing or breastfeeding physician. Feeding the baby with expressed milk
- What you should do: Always check the temperature of the milk before feeding your baby. Always pour out the remaining breast milk at the end of the feeding.
- Don'ts: Never heat breast milk in the microwave. Otherwise, uneven heating and the formation of hot spots in the milk may occur. It can also destroy the nutrients in the milk.
