Description

Gluco Test is a medicinal product in the form of an oral solution containing glucose as its active ingredient. It is intended for use in an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), also known as a "glucose curve." This test is performed in adults if diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance are suspected.

Composition

The active substance of the drug is glucose ( Glucosum anhydricum ).

300 ml of solution contains 75 g of glucose in the form of glucose monohydrate.

Excipients: Citric acid; Sodium benzoate (E 211); Natural orange flavour (lemon oil, grapefruit oil, orange oil, maltodextrin, gum arabic, triacetin); Purified water.

Dosage

Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

The drug is administered orally, either directly or after dissolving in water. Glucose dosage depends on your doctor's recommendations. In cases of hypoglycemia, take a teaspoon or several teaspoons of glucose (5 g - 20 g). To perform an oral glucose tolerance test, follow your doctor's instructions.

Action

Glucose is a sugar and energy source essential for human functioning. This substance is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration and metabolized in tissues, partially being stored in the liver as glycogen. Glucose also acts as a diuretic.

Indications

The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is used to diagnose diabetes and to assess impaired glucose tolerance in adults.

Contraindications

Gluco test should not be used if: you are allergic to glucose or any of the other ingredients of the medicine; you have been diagnosed with diabetes; you have glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome; you have acute gastrointestinal disorders (e.g. vomiting, diarrhea); you have had a resection (removal of part) of the gastrointestinal tract; you have an infection with fever; you are in poor general and nutritional condition.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Vomiting or nausea may occur after consuming a large amount of glucose at one time.

Warnings and precautions

Caution should be exercised when performing the OGTT. Patients should rest between blood draws, near the laboratory, and not consume any food or drink. If symptoms of hypoglycemia occur (sudden weakness, sweating, dizziness), medical personnel should be notified immediately. The OGTT is performed by trained personnel on an empty stomach, after a full night's sleep, and without prior carbohydrate restriction.

Store in the original packaging at a temperature below 25ºC.

Use of other medications

Please inform your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking, have recently taken or plan to take, in particular:

Medicines that may increase the test result (cause a false positive result): laxatives; some diuretics (thiazide diuretics, furosemide); some medicines used to treat HIV infection (protease inhibitors); glucocorticosteroids; thyroid hormones; some hormones such as corticotropin, somatropin; oral contraceptives containing estrogens.

Medicines that may lower the test result (mask existing disorders): caffeine; some medicines that lower blood pressure (reserpine); antidepressants (monoamine oxidase inhibitors); some hormones, such as gonadotropins; some medicines that lower blood sugar levels (metformin, sulfonamide derivatives).

Please note that at least 3 days before the scheduled test, your doctor may recommend discontinuing medications that may affect the test result, provided it is safe for your health.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

The OGTT test in pregnant and breastfeeding women is performed according to strict medical indications.

Use of the drug in children and adolescents

The medicine should not be used in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
