An adult's body contains approximately three to five grams of iron. The majority of this is found in red blood cells as a key component of hemoglobin. This red blood pigment is responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and organs. In muscles, the iron-containing myoglobin acts as a kind of oxygen reservoir. Adequate iron stores contribute to reducing tiredness and fatigue.

The dosage of 14 mg of natural iron per daily dose provides a good daily baseline supply for slightly increased needs. Certain groups of people, including women of childbearing age, pregnant and breastfeeding women, growing children and adolescents, athletes, vegetarians, and vegans, should pay attention to their iron levels.
