Astragalus is een kruid dat al eeuwenlang in de traditionele Chinese geneeskunde wordt gebruikt. Het wordt vaak aangeprezen vanwege de effecten op het immuunsysteem, de lever en het cardiovasculaire systeem. Er zijn echter maar weinig studies die op dit laatste voordeel wijzen. Er is meer onderzoek nodig voordat experts specifieke aanbevelingen kunnen doen voor het gebruik van astragalus voor de voordelen voor het hart.

Astragalus is ook getest op borstkanker, longkanker, hepatitis en verkoudheid. Voorlopige studies suggereren een mogelijk voordeel bij het verlichten of behandelen van deze ziekten, maar net als bij de cardiovasculaire voordelen is verder medisch onderzoek nodig voor een concrete conclusie.

Astragalus is verkrijgbaar in vele vormen, van tabletten tot poeder tot immuunstimulerende siroop.
