Magnesium supplementation with ashwagandha, saffron and vitamin B6
Magnesium and vitamin B6 support the proper functioning of the nervous system, contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and help maintain proper psychological functions. Ashwagandha is a natural adaptogen that helps achieve a state of relaxation, contributing to better mental and physical well-being, in turn, helps maintain a good mood and supports relaxation.
Why is magnesium supplementation worth it?
Magnesium is necessary for the proper functioning of the brain and nervous system, which translates into the feeling of tiredness and fatigue1. Magnesium deficiency can manifest itself in irritability, anxiety, lack of concentration and lethargy, among others. It also interacts with the receptors of important neurotransmitters, such as GABA – responsible for calmness and relaxation3.
The form of magnesium used in the preparation is magnesium citrate. It is one of the most popular magnesium supplements due to its high bioavailability3.
What is ashwagandha?
Ashwaganda (Withania somnifera) is an herb that has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years. In Sanskrit, the word 'ashwa' means 'horse' while 'gandha' means 'smell'. Ashwaganda is a small, low, squat evergreen shrub with velvety leaves and bell-shaped flowers that bears orange fruits, similar in appearance to small tomatoes.
The adaptogenic properties of ashwagandha
Adaptogens are substances of natural origin, most often herbs and plant products, which have a positive effect on the state of the nervous system and brain. This concept was introduced by the Russian scientist Nikolai Lazarev, who formulated three postulates presenting the conditions that a certain plant must meet in order to be considered an adaptogen.
What characteristics should an adaptogen have?
- It is not toxic to the body
- It helps you adapt to stress, reducing its impact on the body
- It contributes to well-being
Herbs with adaptogenic properties include: astragalus, ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng, schisandra, and guduchi.
Supplement with saffron
Saffron is made from the saffron crocus, a purple flower that blooms in the fall and can grow almost anywhere in the world. However, although these plants are subject to geographical adaptation, their use to obtain saffron requires a lot of caution and preparation. The flowers that contain the spice only bloom for 1-3 weeks a year and must be picked by hand, and 1 gram of saffron consists of up to 150 flowers. The active ingredients of saffron are widely used in preparations that improve emotional balance and mood5.
Addition of vitamin B6
Vitamins are divided into fat-soluble and water-soluble. B vitamins belong to the latter. They are responsible, among other things, for: the development and proper functioning of the nervous system and blood synthesis, as well as cell division, but the action of individual vitamins is slightly different. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) used in the preparation is involved in energy metabolism and cysteine synthesis and also supports the functioning of the nervous system6.
