Femannose

Femannose N comes in the form of sachets containing a pleasant-tasting powder for dissolution in water and oral administration. Each sachet contains a precise dose of 2 grams of D-mannose, which facilitates a rigorous and easy-to-follow therapeutic regimen.

The standard pack contains 14 sachets, covering a flexible treatment or prevention period, depending on the recommended regimen.

Femannose D-mannose is intended for people over 14 years of age and is recommended in the following situations:

• Symptomatic treatment of lower urinary tract infections (uncomplicated cystitis), especially those caused by Escherichia coli;
• Prevention of recurrence in patients with recurrent urinary tract infections;
• Adjuvant support in maintaining urological health, especially in women prone to urinary tract infections.

The mechanism of action of D-mannose involves blocking the fimbriae of E. coli bacteria, thus preventing them from attaching to uroepithelial cells. As a result, the bacteria are mobilised and eliminated physiologically through urine, without the need for antibiotic intervention.

According to the manufacturer's recommendations, the dosage regimen varies depending on the purpose of use:

• For treatment (at the first signs of infection): on days 1–3, 3 sachets per day, distributed evenly, then on days 4–5, 2 sachets per day.
• For the prevention of recurrent infections: 1 sachet per day, administered for 30 consecutive days.

The method of administration consists of dissolving one sachet in water and consuming the resulting solution.

Femannose N is contraindicated in the following situations:

• Known hypersensitivity to D-mannose or any of the product's excipients;
• Children under 14 years of age, due to the lack of adequate clinical data for this age group;
• Patients with rare metabolic disorders involving monosaccharide malabsorption

Caution is advised in diabetic patients, as D-mannose is a form of sugar.

Femannose N should not be used as a substitute for antibiotic treatment in severe cases of complicated urinary tract infections or pyelonephritis.

In addition, in cases of fever, severe lower back pain or haematuria, immediate medical advice should be sought.

Femannose N has a very favourable safety profile. However, in rare cases, the following may occur:

• Mild gastrointestinal disorders (bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort);
• Mild allergic reactions (skin rash, itching), especially in people with a known allergy to monosaccharides.

No cases of severe toxicity associated with the administration of D-mannose at the recommended doses have been reported.

Femannose N has no significant interactions with other medicines, making it compatible with most therapeutic regimens, including antibiotics in combination treatments. No negative interactions with food or beverages have been reported.

Although the risk of overdose is low, accidental ingestion of large amounts of D-mannose may lead to gastrointestinal discomfort (osmotic diarrhoea, nausea) or electrolyte imbalances in extreme cases.

In such situations, intensive hydration is recommended and, if symptoms persist, a doctor should be consulted.

Femannose N should be stored in its original packaging, away from light and moisture, at temperatures below 25°C. Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Once opened, the sachets should be used immediately to prevent contamination.
