- Supplemental folic acid intake increases maternal folic acid status. Low levels of folic acid in the mother are a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. The target population is women of reproductive age, and the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily supplemental folic acid intake of 400 μg for at least one month before conception and up to three months after conception.
Essential unsaturated fatty acids from the omega-3 family are important both in the diet of a woman expecting a child and during the period when the developing baby draws nutrients from breast milk. Maternal intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supports normal eye and brain development in fetuses and breastfed infants .
