What is demodicosis? The human Demodex mite (Demodex folliculorum) is a parasite of mites. It resides in the sebaceous glands of the human skin and hair follicles, causing a dermatological disease called demodectosis, which manifests as purpuric pustules. The parasite feeds on sebum and filtered blood plasma, as well as on the secretion of sebaceous glands and epithelial cells. Demodex causes inflammation of the sebaceous gland or hair follicle, preventing sebum secretion. Symptoms include: local fever, inflammation, pain and abscess formation. It is possible to feel a slight itching of the skin in the places where demodex mites live, especially when they actively penetrate the follicle or sebaceous gland. Contributes to the formation of blackheads and blackheads. Demodex feces cause allergies and irritation of the sebaceous glands. Demodex can be identified by microscopic examination of comedones or entire hair follicles.
