- induces the programmed death of abnormal cells by activating proapoptotic genes (eg p53, Bax)
- reduces the formation of new blood vessels in abnormal tissues (neoangiogenesis): reduces the expression of the metalloproteinase MMP-9 and the vascular growth factors VEGF and fibroblastic bFGF
- increases the effects of the immune system on abnormal cells, reducing their ability to invade other tissues: stimulates the synthesis of intercellular adhesion molecules - ICAM1
contributes to balancing the immune system:
- turmeric (curcuma) reduces the action of viruses and bacteria with the ability to modify the structure of cellular DNA and RNA (e.g.: at the level of the liver, the epithelium of the cervix)
- turmeric reduces BAFF (B lymphocyte activating factor)
- contributes to the reduction of swelling, redness and pain in the joints, gastrointestinal mucosa, broncho-pulmonary tissues, vascular wall and abnormal brain structures (amyloid plaques): reduces phospholipase A2 (PLA2), cyclooxygenase (COX-2), lipoxygenase (5- LOX) and nuclear factor NF-kβ
