¹Folic acid supplementation increases folate levels in pregnant women. Low folate levels in pregnant women are a risk factor for neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Therefore, an additional 400 µg of folic acid should be taken daily for at least one month before and up to three months after conception. Neural tube defects are caused by several risk factors. Modifying one risk factor can have a positive effect.
