An internal flow valve prevents air bubbles from forming in breast milk or other liquid. There is no vacuum, which helps reduce unpleasant internal pressure. The controlled flow ensures that the baby feeds at its own pace.
Using a bottle without an internal valve
Some parents are comfortable with the option of removing the valve insert when the baby has reached a certain level of feeding maturity. With no valve, Options+ bottles allow for feeding similar to most bottles with nipple vents. Both the internal valve and the silicone teat are designed to provide a smooth flow of milk. Dr.Brown pacifiers are made of very soft, high-quality silicone, they do not contain BPA. Individual teat grades differ in flow.

A university study looking at nutrient levels in breast milk and feeding with different bottles (during feeds lasting 20 minutes) showed that Dr. Brown's bottles help maintain levels of important nutrients. The valve system reduces the mixing of milk with air and the formation of bubbles in the milk, which easily leads to the loss of nutrients in the milk.
