The olive tree belongs to the olive family and has served as a food source for humans for millennia. Its valuable constituents include primarily oleuropein (6–9%) and the secoiridoid elenolic acid. Other important constituents are flavonoids, triterpenes, and phenols.

Extract from the buds of the black alder (Alnus glutinosa)

The black alder is widespread from Europe across North Africa to West Asia. The buds of this birch relative contain a special mixture of flavonoids, polyphenols, and oligomeric proanthocyanidins, better known as OPCs.
