Friction is a traditional preparation widely used to support the body during periods of colds, flu, musculoskeletal disorders, or episodes of general discomfort. This type of solution for external use is based on combinations of plant extracts, essential oils, and natural active substances, which have a synergistic effect on the body by stimulating peripheral circulation, inducing perspiration, and relieving joint pain.
Forms of release
There are multiple forms of rubs for colds, adapted to different therapeutic needs and user preferences, most of them in the form of an alcoholic solution. They are usually presented in glass or plastic bottles, with a volume between 50 ml and 150 ml, equipped with a cap or sprayer to facilitate application.
For example, the Cold and Flu Rub (50 ml) is a hydroalcoholic solution with extracts of bees, Boswellia serrata, devil's claw, white willow, hot pepper (Capsicum annuum), mentholated alcohol, camphorated alcohol, and arnica oil.
Elidor Rub is a hydroalcoholic solution in a 100 ml bottle, intended for skin massage, used both for musculoskeletal disorders and as an adjuvant in respiratory viruses.
Indications for use
The product has a wide range of uses, derived from both folk tradition and modern clinical observations:
- Respiratory conditions (colds, flu, viral infections): cold rub solutions can be used to induce sweating and reduce fever; they stimulate breathing and reduce congestion of the respiratory tract; they support the body's recovery through their tonic and revitalizing effect.
- Musculoskeletal disorders: relief of acute and chronic joint pain (rheumatism, arthritis, arthrosis); reduction of muscle contractures and tension after intense physical effort; acceleration of peripheral circulation and improvement of tissue oxygenation.
- Adjuvant uses: restoring a feeling of comfort and vitality; calming and invigorating effect after hot baths or saunas; maintenance massage for relaxation and toning.
Dosage
For colds and flu, apply by rubbing vigorously over the entire body, preferably in the evening, followed by bed rest with the body covered to promote perspiration.
For rheumatism and joint pain, apply the solution locally to the painful areas, massaging vigorously, and then cover the area with a cloth or bandage to maintain warmth.
Contraindications
The solution for rubbing colds and flu has several contraindications and precautions:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients (essential oils, plant extracts, camphor, menthol)
- Young children (under 2 years of age), due to the risk of skin irritation and respiratory reactions
- Damaged, irritated, or eczema-prone skin—do not apply to mucous membranes, open wounds, or burns.
Special instructions for use
The rubbing lotion should only be applied to intact skin, with a gentle or vigorous massage, depending on the desired effect (revitalization or local anti-inflammatory effect).
It is recommended to use it in the evening to allow for rest and maximum effect of induced perspiration.
Avoid contact with the eyes, mucous membranes, and sensitive areas of the body.
Side effects
Rubbing is generally well tolerated, but local adverse reactions may occur:
- skin irritation, erythema, or intense burning sensation on the skin;
- allergic reactions to essential oils (itching, rashes, contact dermatitis);
These reactions are rare and reversible after discontinuation of use.
Interactions with other drugs and food
No significant interactions with orally or parenterally administered drugs have been reported, as the rubs are intended for external use.
However, combination with other ointments or creams applied locally to the same area may increase the risk of irritation.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely, but excessive and repeated application to large areas may cause severe skin reactions (dermatitis) and, rarely, respiratory reactions in sensitive individuals.
If accidentally swallowed, the product may be toxic and requires emergency medical attention.
Storage
The product should be stored at temperatures below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. The bottle should be kept tightly closed to prevent evaporation of alcohol and volatile oils. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
