Heparin

Heparin is available in several pharmaceutical forms, but for topical use, it is found in the form of a gel. This formula allows for localised application and gradual absorption of the active substance through the skin, thus providing a direct therapeutic effect on the affected area.

Heparin gel has an emollient texture that promotes the penetration of the active substance into the skin, helping to improve local blood circulation and reduce inflammation.

Santaderm ointment with heparin is indicated for:

• Reducing inflammation and tired legs associated with venous insufficiency
• Relieving peripheral venous congestion by improving microcirculation
• Symptomatic treatment of chronic venous insufficiency, characterised by oedema and a feeling of heaviness in the lower limbs
• Preventing the formation of post-traumatic haematomas and reducing their healing time
• Stimulation of blood circulation and prevention of blood stagnation in the affected areas
• Soothing and cooling of ‘heavy’ and inflamed legs through its emollient and invigorating effect

It is recommended to apply a moderate amount of Heparin Gel to the affected area 3-4 times a day, massaging gently until completely absorbed.

For optimal results, regular use and combination with other methods of supporting circulation (such as wearing compression stockings and physical exercise) are recommended.

The use of Heparin Gel is contraindicated in the following cases:

• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the product
• Open skin lesions or active infections at the application site
• Application on bleeding areas

Heparin Gel should only be applied to intact skin and contact with the eyes and mucous membranes should be avoided. People with a tendency to excessive bleeding should use the product with caution.

It is also recommended that the product not be applied to areas of skin affected by severe irritation, burns or rashes.

Adverse reactions are rare with topical use, but may include:

• Skin irritation manifested by redness and itching
• Mild local burning sensation, which disappears within a few minutes after application
• Local allergic reactions, requiring discontinuation of treatment

If severe or persistent symptoms occur, it is recommended to consult a specialist.

Heparin gel has no significant drug interactions due to its topical use, but it is recommended to avoid simultaneous application with other topical products.

Also, concomitant use with other systemic anticoagulants may increase the risk of bruising and local bleeding.

As the heparin in this gel acts locally, overdose is unlikely. In case of severe adverse reactions, it is recommended to discontinue use and consult a doctor. The effect of heparin can be neutralised with protamine sulphate.

In case of accidental ingestion, seek emergency medical attention.

Store at temperatures below 25°C in a place protected from excessive moisture. Do not expose to direct light or heat sources, as high temperatures may alter the composition of the product. Keep out of the reach of children to avoid accidental ingestion.
